Introduction: For core trainees new to labour ward, the practice of obstetric anaesthesia is a daunting challenge for them and their trainers! The Initial Assessment of Competence in Obstetric Anaesthesia (IACOA) is a key milestone in core training to ensure achievement of the required competencies. Simulation is acknowledged by RCOA as a safe part of structured training for core trainees new to this discipline.1 We describe a pilot study day introducing core trainees to the expected competencies in obstetric anaesthesia as outlined in the Basic Level Training document and mapped to the assessments of the IACOA.
