UNIPORTAL VATS: A TRAINEE’S EXPERIENCE

OBJECTIVES:

We present a Trainee’s  experience with uniportal VATS in a centre actively focusing on Robotic Thoracic Surgery

 

METHODS:

 

42 patients: Feb 2012 – October 2014

 

Comparison to 42 case matched 3 port VATS

 
qDiagnostic & Therapeutic indications
qSingle incision 3 to 4 cm
qNo rib spreading
qConventional VATS equipment
qChest drain inserted through the same incision

 

RESULTS:

28 males and 14 females underwent Uniportal VATS

19  one or multiple wedge resections
 9   Bullectomy & Pleurectomy
 3   Posterior mediastinal tumour
11  Pericardial window

 

Mean operating time was 115 mins

Mean drain dwell time was 2 days

No prolonged air leak

No conversion to open or 2or 3 port VATS

Mean hospital stay  was 3 days

Similar analgesics requirement

CONCLUSIONS:

Uniportal VATS is a feasible and safe technique.
Similar outcomes to 3 Port VATS

Can be taught to trainees

 

 

No statistical difference in outcomes between two groups
