A PROSPECTIVE EVALUATION STUDY OF HORSE-RIDING THERAPY FOR CHILDREN WITH NEUROMUSCULAR DISEASES

Introduction

The term neuromuscular diseases is used to describe a wide range of illnesses which present some disabilities of skeletal muscles.1

The characteristics are abnormal gait patterns and balance, abnormal muscle tone, reduced control of their muscles, asymmetry between agonist and antagonist muscles and poor equilibrium reflexes.2

Physical activity provides many benefits to patients with neuromuscular diseases. These benefits concern the improvement of function, balance, as well as the delaying development of the disorder, with the ultimate result of the reduced morbidity and premature mortality.1,2,3

Therapeutic riding improves the ability of gait, balance, posture and motor function of children with neuromuscular diseases. The three-dimensional motion of the gait of the horse promotes the normalization of motion of the pelvis of the patient, enhances energy expenditure and eliminates abnormal reflexes (movement patterns).4

Aim

The evaluation of therapeutic riding in function, balance and spasticity of patients with neuromuscular diseases.

Material and Method

8 children with NMD

age: 7 to 17 years

12 weeks of therapy, once a week, duration 15-40 minutes per session according to every patient’s ability

evaluation of motor function GMFM

evaluation of  balance (PBS)

Evaluation of spasticity with modified Ashworth scale

Time of evaluation:  1st two months before, 2nd one month before, 3rd  before the intervention, 4th  six weeks after and 5th twelve weeks after the program

Results

Improvement appeared in balance (PBS), spasticity (Modified Ashworth Scale) and gross motor function (GMFM).

Conclusion

Therapeutic Riding consists in an appropriate athletic therapeutic intervention to children with neuromuscular diseases.
