COMPLETE RADIOLOGICAL RESOLUTION AND SEIZURE CESSATION FOLLOWING STEREOTACTIC RADIOSURGERY OF A HYPOTHALAMIC HAMARTOMA

Tuesday, 1 May, 2012 - 13:00
Board 1

Hypothalamic hamartomas (HH) are rare, non-neoplastic, congenital lesions, composed of disorganised neurons and glia that form a discrete lesion fused to the hypothalamus. (1, 2, 3) Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKS) is a minimally invasive procedure used in the management of HH, with a seizure outcome comparable to published surgical results, but much lower associated morbidity. (1) GKS reduces epileptic activity without causing tissue necrosis, thereby sparing normal brain function. (4)
