CHARACTERIZATION OF ATRIAL FIBRILLATION PROPHYLAXIS IN AN INTERNAL MEDICINE NURSERY

Thursday, 6 October, 2011 - 16:36
Board 17

Atrial fibrillation is the most comum disrythmic disease in clinical practice. In Portugal it affects about 2,5% of general population. Its prevalence increases with age reaching absolute values of about 10% in the population over 80 years old. The rising over the years is sharper in women than in men. This knowledge about the population brings an extra concern to clinical practice about primary and secondary prevention and its indirect consequences of this disease, specially tromboembolic complications. It is internationally recognised that anticoagulation is the best treatment to prevent tromboembolic events related to atrial fibrillation, however, the underuse of anticoagulation keeps being the reality.
